Fire and burning
Ignition, spread, burnout, and interactions with water, ice, and TNT.
Fire blocks and burning materials
Fire is a passable material. When Wood, Leaves, Wool, Hay, or Vine catches fire, it keeps its original material while burning. Fire blocks and burning materials have different lifetimes and spread behavior.
Fire periodically tries to ignite orthogonal neighbors, and Lava can ignite nearby materials too. Burning materials disappear when they burn out. Hay spreads fire earlier and burns out faster.
What burning contributes
A combustible material that is burning when it participates in a line clear adds 4 damage per cell. If it burns out first, it no longer contributes as that material. Clearing soon after ignition gives a different result from waiting for a fire to make space.
Contact reactions
- Igniting Ice melts it into Water.
- Igniting TNT starts its fuse and turns it into a moving object. See Explosions.
- Water entering a Fire cell can extinguish it. This does not mean every burning material follows that same extinguishing rule.
- Flameburst and Fireball can leave Fire around their affected area, allowing later spread and liquid interactions.
A fire-like visual effect does not necessarily mean ongoing enemy damage. Distinguish direct hits, burning materials contributing to clears, and later chains.
